Privacy policy

The Five Dollar Club is a donation site that lets members and friends give to their fraternity chapter. This page explains what we collect when you use the site, why, and who can see it.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address, a password (stored only as a secure hash), the name you want shown on the Members page (or "Anonymous"), your class if you give one, and your home chapter.
- Your giving: for each payment, the chapter, the amount you gave, the fees added, how often it repeats, and the date. We also keep the Stripe ids that link your account to your payments and subscriptions.
- Technical data: like any website, our hosting provider records basic request information such as your IP address and browser, which we use to keep the site running and secure.
What we don't collect
Card details are entered on Stripe's own checkout page and go straight to Stripe. Card numbers never pass through or get stored on this site.
How we use it
- To run your account and sign you in.
- To process your gifts and recurring donations through Stripe, and show you your giving history.
- To show the Members leaderboard (see below).
- To send account emails, such as confirming your email address. We don't send marketing email and we don't sell or rent your information.
We won't start using your information for a materially different purpose without telling you first.
What is shown publicly
Each chapter's Members page and home page list donors and how much they gave over the last 30 days. You appear there under the display name you chose, with your class if you added one. If you'd rather not be named, choose "Anonymous" when you sign up or at any time on your account page. Your email address is never shown publicly. Once something is shown publicly, others may have copied it or it may remain in search engines or web archives, and we can't control those copies.
Who else sees your information
- Stripe processes every payment. Each chapter has its own Stripe account, and when you give, your email address and display name are shared with Stripe as a customer record on that chapter's account. Stripe also uses payment information for its own purposes, such as fraud prevention and meeting its legal obligations. Stripe's handling of your data is covered by the Stripe Privacy Policy.
- The chapter you give to can see your payments, email address, and name in its Stripe Dashboard, so it can answer questions, issue receipts, and handle refunds. Each chapter is responsible for its own use of that information, and our terms for chapters limit it to the chapter's own purposes.
- Service providers that run the site for us: our hosting and database provider, the email service that delivers account emails, and the content networks that serve the site's fonts and styles (which see your IP address when your browser loads them).
- The law: we may disclose information if we're required to by law or to protect the site and its users.
- A new owner: if the site is sold, merged, or handed over to another organization, your information may be transferred with it, and this policy will continue to apply to it.
Cookies
We use only the cookies the site needs to work: one that keeps you signed in and one that protects forms from forgery. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. Stripe sets its own cookies on its checkout and billing pages to process payments and prevent fraud.
Do Not Track
Some browsers can send a "Do Not Track" signal. We don't track you across other websites or use advertising trackers, so the site works the same whether or not your browser sends one.
How long we keep it
We keep your account until you ask us to delete it. Records of payments are kept for as long as the chapters and we need them for accounting and tax purposes, even after an account is deleted. Stripe keeps its own records under its policy.
Your choices
- Change your display name, class, Anonymous setting, or home chapter on your account page.
- Update your card or cancel a recurring gift through "Update card or cancel" on your account page.
- To get a copy of your information, correct it, or delete your account, contact us below. We'll respond within 30 days. We may need to confirm that you are the account holder before acting on a request, and we may decline a request where the law allows, for example if it would reveal someone else's information.
Children
The site is meant for adults. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian's permission to give, and we don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If we learn that we have, we'll delete it.
Security
The site is served only over HTTPS, passwords are hashed, and payments are handled by Stripe. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. For significant changes we'll let members know by email or a notice on the site.
Contact
Questions or requests about your information: contact details coming soon. Questions about a specific payment are best sent to the chapter you gave to.
